My Approach to Therapy

My approach to therapy depends on the individual. Each person is complex and may have a range of issues that are complicated and multi-determined. We will work together to decide how to best focus our sessions. I try to promote an interactive, collaborative  approach to therapy.
As a clinical social worker, I take a holistic approach and consider various dimensions of a person’s experience. Problems can be intrapersonal (within yourself/intrapsychic), interpersonal (involving others/relational), environmental (work, living situation, dysfunctional or oppressive systems), or a combination of all these. We will look at the whole picture and focus on what is most relevant to the problem you are facing.
My past psychotherapy training was rooted in contemporary psychodynamic theories. More recently in my clinical practice, I have focused on further training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) with couples, as well as its applications to individual therapy.
If needed or requested, I will refer you to other professionals. If you are already working with a psychiatrist, for example, I will collaborate with that provider as needed.
